The North American P-64 was a single-engine fighter aircraft designed and produced by North American Aviation in the United States in the 1930s. It was a smaller and less powerful variant of the North American P-51 Mustang, which became famous during World War II.
The P-64 was developed as a cheap and lightweight fighter, and was powered by a Pratt & Whitney R-1535-13 radial engine rated at 750 hp. It had a top speed of just over 235 mph and was armed with two .30 caliber machine guns. The aircraft was also equipped with a retractable landing gear and a closed cockpit.
Unfortunately, the P-64 did not perform well in flight tests and was not adopted for service by the US Army Air Corps. Only nine P-64s were built, and they were mainly used for training purposes and as testbeds for new technologies. Today, only one P-64 is known to survive, and it is located at the National Museum of the US Air Force in Dayton, Ohio.
